As a premise for a story, time travel must surely be one of the most difficult to tackle - how to explain the mechanism of time travel, how not to lose the readers' track of chronology and so on. Stevenson's real achievement here, however, is not that he manages to write about time travel (though he does this with seeming ease) but to have also constructed a singularly compelling storyline around it. His characters are very much real - the reader really does feel their joys and their pains along with them. It is Stevenson's ability to take an essentially science fiction premise and transform it into a truly moving and dramatic story that is the heart of "The Magic Number" Very highly recommended.
