Mar 14, 2016Joseph J. Truncale has distilled his many years of knowledge into a concise manual detailing the practical applications of the miniature baton for law enforcement professionals. At the outset, Mr. Truncale makes it clear that his manual follows no specific system; all techniques outlined can be performed with virtually any mini-baton, including a small aluminum flashlight such as the Minimag. The manual then touches on mini-baton nomenclature and discusses the use of force, liability, and excessive force issues—subjects crucial for law enforcement personnel. Chapter nine—Basic Control and Takedown Techniques—is the core of the book. Mr. Truncale details five techniques to take a suspect to the ground prior to handcuffing. This chapter is followed by a chapter on vehicle extractions—two techniques you can use to remove an uncooperative suspect from an automobile. Although the manual does not include a chapter on passive resistance, several of the techniques from chapters nine and ten... More > can be adapted for that application. Chapters eleven and twelve cover basic striking and self-defense. There’s no glitz or glitter here, no jujitsu tricks. Someone grabs your wrist, you strike. Someone grabs your throat, you strike. Simple but effective. The concluding chapters are intended for anyone wishing to implement a course of instruction. This material includes a proposed course outline and a sample proficiency exam. Although the mini-baton’s popularity with law enforcement has waned in favor of such devices as expandable batons, Taser guns, and pepper spray, its advantages make it an ideal choice for a number of contemporary settings. As a control device, the mini baton is very humane, and its sight is not objectionable to the public, even when it is being used. It cannot malfunction or harm anyone by accident. Unlike a handgun or a police nightstick, if it is lost in a scuffle it cannot be used against its owner without some knowledge or training. To sum up, Mr. Truncale’s manual is an excellent reference for both law enforcement and civilians alike. Whether you’re a cop on the beat seeking less-lethal options, a security officer who is prohibited from carrying a firearm, someone who works in a profession that makes you vulnerable to assault—and these days, that’s just about everyone—or just a man or woman looking to stay safer in your everyday life, you should own a copy of this book.< Less
