Permeated Reparation: Lower Ninth Ward Transitional Housing

Permeated Reparation: Transitional Housing in New Orlean’s Lower Ninth Ward 2010 University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee Architectural Thesis. As a result of Hurricane Katrina over 1800 people lost their lives and the resulting migration was the largest in United States history surpassing even the Civil War. Over 1 million people left their homes. Permeated Reparation is an attempt to recapture and repair (reparation) the magnificent culture and atmosphere that defined the Lower Ninth and the rest of New Orleans. The goal of Permeated Reparation is to blend a variety of housing, commercial and public spaces meant to diffuse and spread (permeate) through the Lower Ninth. This includes “Volunteer Housing” for the hundreds of weekly volunteers that continue to travel to the Lower Ninth Ward and donate their time to rebuilding and secondly “Transitional Housing” for both new populations looking to move to the Lower Ninth and former residents attempting to move back to the area.
