When Sam, a 14-year-old boy, is killed in a car accident, he finds himself in a position to observe his family and best friend as they struggle to deal with a growing list of problems sparked by his death.
Sam’s best friend John turns to drugs when his home life implodes following the accident. Meanwhile, Sam’s sister, Amy, tries to distance herself from her social circle that isn’t as eager to part ways. Sam’s mother quits her job and stays at home, relying on Amy and various distractions to keep her from dwelling on the loss of her only son. These thoughts haunt her, figuratively and literally, every night as she tries to sleep. Their experiences eventually lead the three of them, as well as Sam, together in a way they had never thought possible.
