The book is an extraordinary voyage from turbulent colonial adolescence to mere eccentric, off-the-wall, ex-mental hospital detainee, home-county adult. It attempts to de-stigmatise mental health, making light - even humour in moments of agony, portraying it as a recoverable illness. Hidden in the sub-text there’s a love story, contradicted by an inability to comprehend the real essence of love. Educated in England, the main character is not able to come to terms with the iniquities of Apartheid back home and this anguish is a recurring theme.
