Judith's book is so valuable for our extended family, she has been tireless, and has created an authentic and wonderful document, that brings the story of our family to life. It is so important, particularly as older generations pass away, and not all seem to understand the importance of preserving these stories for our current and future generations. Thankyou Judith, it is a wonderful example of how passion, hard work and follow through can pay off. Ben Wood

Which is more interesting to read about: the people in the family store in the shtetl in Eastern Europe, or the people who "made it" to the level of the House of Lords in the United Kingdom? Thanks to Judith Berlowitz's untiring research and wonderful way of writing about what she found, the entire story, covering centuries of time and hundreds of people is not only interesting but surprising in many places. I am awed by the amount of documentation that went into this story, and the many different ways Judith under-pins the narrative. Letters? Of course! Grave stones? Yes. There are telegrams, and birth records, ships' manifests: more kinds of pieces of paper than I would have thought possible. It is all to the good, it all holds the stories of the families together. Although I am not a member of this family, not a descendant of the long-ago shopkeeper, I found the book fascinating. I recommend it to anyone with the least interest in European and American history.

Talk about a labor of love! So much time, work, and connection to the past has gone into this monumental book. It is so much more than an academic reconstruction of the past. Every included person is brought to life. I have lost so many of my relatives and, consequently, lost so many stories from the past generations, but now I have this book to keep me connected to my past, to bring these family members back into my life. Thank you, Judith, for this treasure.

This is an amazing book. I feel awed by its sheer size and by the numbers of people spanning 2 centuries that it encompasses. My interest in the Philipsborn history and genealogy is enhanced by the fact that my family is part of this story. It is fun to read, from the first pages on, how Judith compiled all the information and documents she has included, and then to come to the 12 page section that tells the story of my own branch of this family. This book is a treasure and its story puts me and my family in our place in a much larger history than we would otherwise have known about. I am reading the book in small doses, to take in the stories of people I will never know face to face, but whom, thanks to Tom Philipsborn and Judith Berlowitz, I can meet and know through the pages of this book. Thank you both!
