Inside Out and Outside In

ByJulee Browning

This article is the culmination of two pieces of research conducted over a three-year period commencing in 2004. The experiences of people who have had the experience of being adopted and those who were raised by a parent suffering with Schizophrenia were topics that ignited personal interest, a great deal of compassion and self reflection. This article seeks to provide an outlet for the experience of the field researcher who conducted these two pieces of research in a kind of cathartic release. It explores the significance of insider and outsider research and the unanticipated impact on the researcher during the course of enquiry. The research methodology used for both enquiries is outlined in conjunction with verbatim comments as communicated by the participants of the studies. The author of this article reflects upon the personal experience of this research as insider and a semi-outsider and how the rapport she built with the participants influenced the outcome of the research.
