2027 (Gregorian calendar): Scientists experiment with a strain of virus to develop a definitive cure for cancer. What occurs is a new strain of invincible yet seemingly benign virus that spreads through mere skin contact. The only obvious symptom of what is initially called Virus securus is a dark circle that appears in the center of an infected person's forehead. Through preliminary study, all that can be determined is that the circle is permanent following its initial appearance, which occurs for every infected person at seemingly random times. With more extensive study, it is finally discovered that the onset of the infected's circle marks that person's "half-life": the point at which that person has already lived exactly half as long as he or she will live.
