Sep 20, 2009"Rapid Documentation of Policies and Procedures -- The Handbook" I really liked this book. It is practical, common-sense guidance, and I found over my career that many people need such guidance on this subject. The "golden rules (page 33) are very much on target, as is the "input - value-dd steps - output" (page 41). I have mentioned this book to some of my working relationships and clients. Aug 30, 2009"Rapid Documentation of Policies and Procedures -- The Handbook by Juliet M. Kontaxis" Contained in this valuable little book are the most useful and thorough instructions for producing the best policies and procedures documentation I have seen. As a financial executive in health care, policies and procedures always seem to be produced on the back end of the tremendous changes taking places in the industry today. I am using this wonderful book to begin creating policies and procedures for accounting activities that must deal with three different data systems as we add new clinics and move to a new practice management system. The easy-to-follow instructions and clearly laid out formats for manual presentation will aid in training our new employees and clarify management’s policies in a world where technological advances are demanding that the work force shorten their learning curve. The clear, concise steps set forth in “The Handbook” from the “Straw Man” through distribution... More > have been invaluable in these efforts. The “Handbook” is a must-have for financial and operations managers alike. Submitted: Lois Stoddard< Less
Jul 28, 2009"Rapid Documentation of Policies and Procedures---The Handbook" I came to Juliet Kontaxis's book with little if any appreciation for the fundamentals and challenges of organizing and monitoring corporate procedures. As a practicing attorney for the past 3 decades, and the purported managing partner in my firm, I have somehow largely avoided systematizing the internal operations of our office, in favor of ad hoc, case by case problem solving. Quite simply, my focus has always been on client issues first, and firm administration second. I therefore approached the book with some trepidation, fearing that an international business consultant the level of Juliet Kontaxis would quickly overwhelm me with organizational concepts and premises far beyond my limited knowledge and experience. I could not have been more wrong. Through this very practical and highly readable "how to" on creating a workable and comprehensive policies and procedures manual, Mrs. Kontaxis takes... More > the mystique out of the process, and teaches us that this impotant function is more a product of good preparation and common sense, than Wharton school wizardry. Using a simple and sensible presentation style, the book studiously avoids complicated business school jargon and instead lays out a step-by-step approach to drafting and maintaining a functional, reliable document which--regardless of the business setting--is easy to understand, implement and maintain. Which is not to say the undertaking itself is easy. Mrs. Kontaxis makes clear that this a significant undertaking, requiring very substantial time commitments and organizational skills. What comes across loud and clear, however, is that despite the magnitude of the task, the key to success is largely the result of great preparation, and an intelligent, organized approach to information gathering. In sum, this is a must read for anyone who is involved in, or thinking about improving the documentation of policies and procedures in their business environment. It is a career's worth of business acumen served up in an easy to digest format, which will pay dividends for both those who take on the task of writing a policies and procedures manual themselves, as well as those who want to evaluate the work of third party consultants hired to do so. Jun 29, 2009"Documentation made easy" Juliet Kontaxis has written an instructive book on the business subject she knows better than probably anyone else, Rapid Documentation of Policies and Procedures. For a topic that has so much potential complexity, she has skillfully broken it down in easy to understand components and has even added a section with sample manuals and timesaving tips. I find this book just the type of helpful guide I would want every line manager in my operation to study and keep readily available as documentation needs and revisions arise. Clear, accurate documentation of a firm’s operations are now a top matter for auditors and regulators as well as a key part of how companies can train their staff. Ms. Kontaxis has captured all the essential elements of rapid documentation under one cover and I found it a very useful book.
Mar 7, 2009"Rapid Documentation of Policies and Procedures - The Handbook" As I began to read Juliet Kontaxis’ book, I immediately was struck by two thoughts. First, where was she in 2001 when 5 of us were chartered to document a Project Management and System Development process that would bring an international technology group to a successful CMM Level 5 assessment. And, second, what an irony to be reading such a great book defining the process to define process. I found this book to be an extremely easy read that is obviously written by an expert in writing process and procedure documents. It contains too many ‘pearls’ to list here. But techniques like the recaps at the end of each section, the inclusion of graphics (placed judiciously but not too many), the inclusion of insights (like the golden rules), all encourage the reader to continue for more hints and guidance. As I read the development stage and interview process, I thought how useful these concepts would be in our... More > methodology for gathering business requirements. I would (and will) recommend this book for anyone who is charged with the job of managing and development of procedures< Less
