The setting is an imagined town in Belgium, toward the end of WWII. The German Army has abandoned the town because of the attacks of the guerillas. Now that the occupiers are gone, the guerillas are challenging the town authorities, demanding new elections and punishment of those who collaborated with the Germans. A central figure in the conflict is a popular sculptor who is a teacher in public school. Both sides want his support. He is in a dilemma: the government supplies his livelihood, but he is seeking the hand of the sister of one of the guerilla leaders.
