Two Story Houses: An Exploration of Williamsburg I-Houses Through William Faulkner
Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
This thesis attempted to explore the possibilities and limitations of the adaptability of the I-House specifically found in Williamsburg County, SC. William Faulkner’s characters were used as clients to explore variations of the I-House. Using Faulkner’s characters made it possible to analyze interesting and unique characters in such a way that census information could not match. Faulkner’s literary prose guided the design decisions to create unique designs that epitomize the character families. The I-House, site and character clients were analyzed and combined to produce three houses that represented the different families. It was discovered that through manipulations of the type’s form and elements many variations can be developed while still maintaining the essence of the I-House. If the rules of the I-House are pushed too much the semblance of the type is lost and ceases to be a functioning house. The I-House variations can be used to express the inhabitant while conforming to their needs.
