Dom is in his early twenties wondering what to do with his life. Like so many his age, he is lost among competing ideologies. He is a character tortured by his melancholy. Not by his depression, but by the nagging questions: What is so wrong with a lasting sorrow? And is there a way to completely eradicate emotional pain? If so, would we want to?
He becomes involved in a relationship with a woman who understands the social value of life a little more acutely than Dom. He also meets a former gang member and it challenges his individualist upbringing. Tribalism holds natural ties as absolute. The meaning that comes from friends and family brings joy to life.
This leads him to the university dorms where he learns about communal living. Universalism desires absolute equality. Standardize the response to every need and every person will be equally happy. All the rooms look the same until they are decorated. Everyone eats in the same cafeteria. But he finds this also problematic.
