A History of British Rag Rugs

eBook (PDF), 5 Pages
Price: $2.74
There are two traditional methods recognised in Britain for making rugs from waste fabric and hessian, hooky and proddy. Proddy has many different names but produces a shaggy pile most suited to abstract designs while hooky results in a smooth surface and is often used for pictorial designs. The techniques are well-known but their origins in Britain are unclear and there are few published accounts. The following paper explores new thinking about the origins and history of this little known craft.
