By identifying rag rugs as unique representations of ‘Americanness’ collectors sought to attach a symbolic meaning to their rugs. A meaning which taps deep into people’s feelings for themselves and their country and of course enhances the monetary value attached to the artefacts concerned. An examination of the history of collecting these rugs reveals the changing nature of the symbolism attached to them. These changes reflect the greater social changes that took place as the United States and Canada emerged as nation states during the 19th and early 20th century.
