"Where Were These Rules When I Was in H.S.?" That was my first thought about halfway through reading this book. I knew I was reading a piece of fiction, of course, and so realized that "the rules" were partly the author's advice and experience and partly plot device. But I didn't care! If crazy Andy--who thinks she's too tall, too "fat" and too forthright to ever get a guy to think of her as anything more than a friend--can get over herself and finally realize her inner "Hot Girl" then there's hope for me, too. Which is not to say that My Big Fat Friend is a self-help book. Not at all. But I saw pieces of myself in Andy and her issues with herself. Sometimes Andy is a great friend who won't take anything off anyone (for which I cheered and told myself to speak up) and sometimes she was was blind as a bat to the awesome or crappy things going on around (for which I wanted to throw something at her and sternly warned myself against). If you don't... More > find yourself laughing and crying and rolling your eyes going "Please tell me you can't see what this jerk's trying to pull" at this book--either because of Andy's antics or her best friend Brittany's--then you haven't lived long enough. Seriously. Andy and Brittany, while not "every-girl," embody pieces of all of us. You will laugh. You will cheer. You will probably grumble at both Brittany (trying to fix Andy) and Andy (refusing to be fixed by Brittany). You will make plans with your girlfriends to spend an inordinate amount of time indoors to read through a tiny, frilly pink book that you made yourself while treating yourselves to an ungodly amount of soaps, lotions and perfumes--something you may not have ever even considered doing before. And you will believe in The Rules.< Less
