The Struggle for Kathy’s Soul is a poignant story about how historic religious and family dynamics complicate the chance for love between two women in the changing social and sexual milieu of 1970s California. Ross lets the reader both understand and sympathize with the choices Kathy and Susan face and have to make.

This novel captures the essence of life "in the closet" in the 1970s and the ambivalence of choosing between true love and social pressure. The sub-plot paints a realistic picture of the foster home system and the social workers who try to find happy endings for the children that they serve. A must read for the LGBT community and anyone who enjoys books about the choices that define people's lives.

This novel is so intimate and yet captures the attention of the reader on several levels. I would like to recommend the book to all those that have an open mind.
