Horses and Horse People. Hauntings & Secrets. They dominate and intimidate Maggie's every waking second in Del Mar's horse country--just as she attempts a last-chance life makeover. At first it's only daylight she sees: fledgling freedom from her drug-addicted ex-husband, and a rush of empowerment to discover new love, in a new world, at a bustling equestrian center. However, darkness lurks behind the daylight. If only it weren't for the strange shadows, inexplicable noises, and that unwelcoming staircase troubling Maggie and her young daughter Kat's peace in their inherited Del Mar home In this harrowing ghost story, Maggie Flores, is dually haunted by the unexplainable, malignant presence in her new home and by her ex-husband Tim's tragic meth addiction. Tim too, is haunted by toxic, increasingly vicious shadows from his past -- and from beyond the grave -- that threaten Maggie, himself, and their young daughter.

"The Shadow Man by Karin Coddon" I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you live near Del Mar, California, or ride horses, you’ll get a kick (no pun intended!) out of it, and the references to familiar places and experiences. If you enjoy a fun read, a well-plotted mystery/suspense story, or a more serious exploration of the human psyche and its failings and strengths, then I recommend The Shadow Man. Who knows, you might just learn about 20th century philosophy, as well. On its surface, this is the story of a haunted house, and its insidious effects on the people who reside or visit there. As the hero and heroine attempt to unravel the mystery and banish the haunting spectre, there is another layer which explores the perils of addictions, to drugs, alcohol, and love, and how they, too, haunt the main characters. And, a deeper level explores the haunting of the characters by a family’s secrets and lack of introspection. Interlaced with the unfolding plot are wicked depictions... More > of various social and demographic “types”, humorous contemporary political banter, and informative discussions of 20th century philosophical theories.< Less
