Highway Girl is a collection of creative non-fiction pieces about my mother and her life. The project combines my retelling of some of my mother’s memories with my own memories of her and her relatives. My research consisted of investigating the craft of writing creative non-fiction as well as filling gaps in my knowledge of my mother’s earlier years. The central themes that emerged include generational differences, class issues, gender issues, and issues surrounding region and ethnicity.

Oct 15, 2009"Wonderful Creative Approach... " Highway Girl weaves a story through a series of essays. Sailstad shows the cultural aspect of a region that she visits and pays it gratitude despite quirky characters (relatives included) and a different socio-economic mix than she is used to. She shows the common features of life's experiences with humor and compassion. I loved the book and hope to see more from her!
Jun 12, 2007"(Re)View from a friend of the story subject ..." I am a professional colleague and friend of the mother who is the subject of this collection of stories written by her daughter, Karyn. Knowing Karyn's mom, Dee, in an entirely different context than her family, knowing something of her colorful family history, and never having met Karyn but having heard lots about her from her mom over the years, gives me an interesting vantage point from which to filter and enjoy these stories. Although the details of our stories differ greatly, Karyn's mom and I share many things: we are about the same age, we are both female scientific professionals, we both came from Catholic northeast families that can be generously referred to as quaintly dysfunctional, we were both painfully shy when we were younger, we were the first in our families to pursue higher education, and we both worked full time while raising 2 kids, having to battle the school system on occasion to get our kids the help... More > and resources that they needed to succeed. Some of these things I have only just learned from reading Karyn’s stories. My kids being some years younger than Dee’s, I have greatly benefited from her shared stories, and advice and encouragement, having traveled down this road before me. As I have learned more of her story over the years, my regard and respect for her has only grown. I have come to admire her greatly for her inner strength and perseverance, and her personal integrity. I bring all this to my reading of her daughter’s stories. I loved the book and read it in one sitting the evening that it arrived in the mail. Karyn has a unique and confident writer’s voice, and keen eye for people and detail. I think she has admirably succeeded in her goal to be a quiet observer and listener, to not shape the story but let it be told, and to strive for a vein of honesty and truth in her stories. And aspects of the stories did resonate with me, on many levels. Most of all, I appreciate very much Karyn’s generous, sensitive and respectful treatment of her mother’s history. A child’s journey to reach the point where they can stand back and view their parent in such a light and offer such a warm and loving tribute is a gift beyond compare to any parent. I feel deeply honored to have been allowed a glimpse into the inner sanctum of my friend’s relationship with her daughter, and to hear her daughter’s strong, independent voice come through.< Less
