Journeys, as a photobook, works slightly differently to the norm. This is down to the way that instead of showcasing an artist or photographer's strongest portfolio, it shows the critical process undertaken by the author to arrive at a portfolio of finished images. In many ways, it points to a more analogue style of photography - the pages showing crossed out photographs being reminiscent of a contact sheet being edited by the photographer to know which negatives to enlarge in the darkroom. However, the sheer volume of images brings it back up to the digital age, where the ability to fire off hundreds of frames is used by the modern digital photographer. As a book, Journeys works well. The "contact sheet" pages provoke more of a response from the reader, as you try and work out why which shots were chosen, and whether the resulting photograph is perhaps the one you would've chosen from the selection. Then, of course, there is the finished photograph from each group - an... More > image that can stand alone in it's own right. This duality means that the book sustains the reader's interest from the starting, striking cover right to the colophon at the end of the book. The consistent layout of the book also helps bind the sections together, that otherwise might appear to be a little disparate. The nature of the photographs being taken throughout the day means there are obvious bonds between the images, but the chronology of the images is reinforced well by the layout. The consistency in the layout also helps create a 'rhythm' for the reader as they work through the book, making you want to continue on and see the next batch of images and the resultant stand-alone shot. A strong visual aesthetic tied in with a strong conceptual idea means that overall, this is a high quality photobook. All that remains is to hope that the print team at Lulu can convert the highly polished .PDF file that was reviewed in this piece into a finished photobook that does the photographs - and the book design - justice.< Less
