It is Kate’s misfortune that she was torn from her much-loved Grandmother at the age of seven when her family moved from Grantham to the Cotswolds. Happily, she has a twenty-year archive of her Grandma’s letters from 1962 to 1982. These she shares with us in this gentle, thoughtful book about a time before the advent of mobile phones and the internet when people communicated by writing letters. Kate’s commentary after each letter explains the family relationships and activities and reminds us of the national events of the time. For those of us who were teenagers or young adults in the 60s and 70s it brings back a variety of memories from the 1966 World Cup to Green Shield Stamps, the Miners’ Strike, Margaret Thatcher and the Right to Buy. All our yesterdays encapsulated in a charming book written with love. Kate’s Grandma would be proud.
