"Rag Doll Sally - Depression Era Gem" Katharine Lord was raising her 4 sons as the primary breadwinner in the Depression era when she created her children's books Rag Doll Sally and Bill's Animals. The illustrations are breathtakingly gorgeous Art Deco and the story is filled with the longing for security and cultural modes that were not always in sync with personal reality. Pre-feminism by decades this intrepid artist mother wrote and illustrated stories filled with assumptions and longings for the life she wanted and did not have. There were no full color books for her boys and no security in family cash flow. It is a delightful set of illustrations that any artist will enjoy, and a sweet story that young families today will understand as an idyll.
