Jefferson C. Davis was an officer of unquestioned ability who spent his adult life serving in his country’s military. He was a devout Unionist during the secession troubles, though his attitudes towards slavery caused some to call him a “Copperhead.” His battlefield heroics earned the praise of his superiors, but a shining military record was marred by two ugly incidents.
