Jesus Christ used stories called parables to teach His hearers about the kingdom of heaven. Broadly speaking, these parables may be interpreted in two different ways. In the first way, the parables are taken as instruction in what we must do to belong to the kingdom of God. In the second way, the parables open our eyes to see what our Lord has done and keeps on doing to make us citizens of His kingdom. The second way predominates in the poems of To You It Has Been Given.

Kathryn Hill uses poetry to explain and clarify 42 parables in this picture filled volume. Her poems deepen the reader's understanding of the parables which are a substantial part of the recorded preaching of Jesus. Our Lord's parables contain great volumes of truth in very few words. Reading these parables with Kathryn Hill's accompanying poems builds on the parable's rich imagery and blesses the reader with timeless teachings. This book is a perfect personal devotional and would be an excellent group Bible study resource.
Come ye to the banquet, all ye who are weary and heavy laden, especially those who find most poetry obtuse! Kathryn Hill’s To You It Has Been Given is wonderfully straightforward and illuminating. She unpacks the parables of our Lord, finding Him where the Holy Spirit has placed Him. Christology at its best. The pictures are a wonderful added touch, so too the two indices, one of which weds familiar hymn tunes to a number of the texts. This would be a great Bible class text for a study of the parables, and a nice takeaway for the participants. --The Reverend Peter M. Berg, Pastor, St. Peter Evangelical-Lutheran Church, Chicago
This is Kathryn's second book of poetry. Her first, "Rich in Grace," was a collection of meditations in verse inspired by the medieval "Biblia Pauperum." She improves upon her method in that work by joining 19 wood engravings by the Pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millias and 42 parables of our Lord to 43 original poems. "To You It Has Been Given" includes a bibliography of exegetical works consulted, an index of suggested hymn tunes for selected poems, and an index of the synoptic parables texts. This cleverly conceived work would be equally at home in a pastor's study, Bible class, or with the home-schooled. Kathryn Ann Hill has published 40 poems since 2003 in a variety of publications. Her verse has been set to music on more than one occasion. In 2011 the Concordia Theological Seminary Kantorei commissioned a setting of her Christmas poem, "Christ Lay in a Manger."
