May 19, 2009"A novel to lift your spirits" "Jenny's Climb" is a heartwarming first novel about a college graduate named Jenny, who returns to her family's home in small-town West Virginia, and soon finds love behind the desk at her first job interview. Jenny soon finds herself getting to know this lawyer, Dan, as well as his extended family, in part by working at Dan's brother's wood shop. The reader is treated to descriptions of a wholesome American town in which love and family really do make the world go round. The characters are real people, compassionate, but with their sensitivities, too. Strong, independent women with good heads on their shoulders are also sometimes dependent on their loved ones to give them the reassurance and extra push from time to time. Relationships grow and change. There are no abrupt plot twists, even though movies today suggest that any idyllic story such as this one can not continue uninterrupted. And yet I waited for conflict: a huge fight... More > between lovers, a shocking revelation that tears apart a family, or a horrible accident. Instead, life happens, and for the most part, life is uneventful. But uneventful does not mean boring. The author captures life's details: a play-by-play of a family game of Capture the Flag, the anticipatory moments before a surprise birthday party for the family matriarch, the methodical steps in preparing a meal. And it is in these ordinary routines that relationships are built and strengthened, and we are reminded of how and why we love. This is a story about the American Dream and our choices regarding family and career. For many of us, our families are scattered throughout the country, and in this novel, we can imagine what it might be like if we had not all moved away. The final bonus of this novel is the set of photographs of nature taken by the author. These include beautiful mountain scenes, and a photo of a lake in the autumn, and many close-ups of flowers. My favorite is a nighttime time-lapse photo in which we see star trajectories as they circle the North Star.< Less
