Oct 15, 2009"Stereotypically Youth by Katrina Cadogan " When viewing this photobook my first reaction was that the images had been captured well and have been carefully thought through. It was clear to see that the concept of the book has been based around the photographer’s youth research. The book shows images of youths living their lives doing things they enjoy, such as talking on their mobile phones, reading, dancing and playing computer games. This book also included images of their journeys on the buses and at youth centers showing how stereotypes are formed and associated within different societies. Katrina’s images also show how teenagers are represented through the media today; she has done this by adding images of youths covering their faces and wearing the hoody. Katrina’s book provides a compelling look at the Stereotype, teenage life that has been based on the perceptions of youth through the eyes of the media. The front cover of this book is plain black with just the... More > title of the book written in white (Stereotypically Youth) and the Authors name (Katrina Cadogan). I believe the relationship between the book cover and the book block works well together. Having a plain front cover complements the coloured images inside and the small amount of text used in the book works well as a divide for the images. The narrative of this photobook appears to be straightforward. It is a series of images that have been sectioned into eight different themes, such as The Pleasure of Beauty, Hoody, Dance, and Their Journey. Using this structure gives a continuous flow throughout the book and each section includes a title followed by images. The content page is convenient as it gives the viewers an insight into how the images inside the book have been arranged, allowing them to know the book’s categories and structure. Along side these pages, Katrina also added a clear introduction to the youths’ own opinions on the negative stereotypes. The images have been well photographed, leading to a look that is pleasant and colorful. The graphic layout of the book is one photograph on the right hand page and the other page left blank. None of the images include any text on them or along side them but this isn’t needed as the titles and the images have linking movement between them that tell the story on their own. Stereotypically Youth has been neatly presented with a perfect binding finish and is currently priced at £16.73. The book contains 90 pages of 9" x 7" images making it a photobook worth looking at.< Less
