Commitment: The Journey from Beginning to End By Kay Bradley This intimate and searching portrait of a marriage tells the story of the author’s commitment, not only to her husband but to the ideal of commitment and to the idea of herself as a person capable of commitment. Both the ideal and the idea are severely tested by the radical social shifts in the ‘sixties and ‘seventies, and also by special challenges within the marriage itself, a partnership of two psychologists. Bradley’s husband is bi-polar, a scintillating, sometimes cutting wit in his manic phase, with periods of black depression that cast a cloud over both lives. As a child, the author wanted to “care deeply about something beyond myself.” Her book shows how this longing literally wed her to her marriage vows, allowing her to stick-with-it “in sickness and in health.” As an adult child of an alcoholic, she relates to issues like co-dependency and the lack of boundaries as they arise in other parts of her life (she’s a... More > mother, a Quaker, a writer, a student of Akido), and she recounts moments of insights that appear, not in spite of, but because of these difficult challenges. Well written, self-aware, the book raises important questions and shares how one woman meets them.< Less
