The Tanfield Railway, in the north-east of England, is the oldest working railway in the world. Sections of the line were first laid in 1725 and it operated as a colliery line until its closure in 1970. The vision and energy of a group of steam railway enthusiasts resulted in the line re-opening to passengers, in a limited form, at Marley Hill during 1975. Since then, constant effort has transformed and extended the railway to a length of 3 miles between Sunniside, the northern terminus, through Andrews House and Causey Arch to East Tanfield in the south. The Marley Hill yard is home to a remarkable collection of locomotives, carriages and rolling stock that record a part of railway's fascinating history. The engine shed, built in 1854, is Europe's earliest example still in operation. Explore and experience this evocative and vibrant heritage steam railway through a collection of 120 original monochrome images that document and capture the character of the Tanfield Railway.
