"Travels of a nignog" Surprise! Surprise! For those avid book lovers that, due to its title "Travels of a Nig Nog" imagined that there would be racial overtones in this book, could not be further from the facts. The time frame is in the 1950's, a time when "gay" referred to a person that was merry and light hearted, definitely not a homosexual. Likewise Nig Nog was a British army term that was applied to raw recruits who were regarded to be stupid. My reason for reading this book was, that following numerous years serving in the Royal Australian Air Force, I love all things military. It is essentially a book about growing up, moving to another dimension after the safe life within one's family. The author has presented us with a very humerous book, written in army language, with many descriptive passages that deal with different countries and the people within. I'm sure the sexy bars he so vividly describes are unfortunately a thing of the past, as is also... More > the life he lives in Africa. It's a snapshot of events that eventually brought about the demise of the British Empire. A book to be recommended fully supported with many photographs.< Less

I found this book especially interesting as when I read it I was the same age as the author had been in the book. It reflects the clear differences between generations spanning over sixty years, and how times have changed dramatically. I know not what life is like in the army nowadays, however, by reading Keith Milton’s Travels of a Nig Nog, I gained insight into what life was like in the army in the 1950s. This book is about growing up, making decisions that will alter your life forever and stepping into uncertain circumstances where anything can happen. Keith Milton writes fluidly and it is clear in his writing that these memories are ones that are very important to him. I found his writing to be funny and at times emotional, as he shares with us what it’s like to be in the middle of a war, away from family and people that love you, and in a place where your future is hanging in the balance.
