Just finished ‘Ghost Writer’, Keith’s fourth Novel, which is well up to his consistently comic and entertaining standard. The narrator, Peter, an introvert, lacking in confident, self-esteem, motivation and social skills {possibly on the spectrum} joins a creative writing class populated by other odd-balls and mis-fits. There are numerous cringing and laugh out loud incidents and descriptions but, as the tale progresses, Peter/Pete ‘Hutch’ starts to get possibly overly suspicious of his fellow classmates and the lacklustre tutor as a disturbing darker side seems to be emerging? Other amusing and curious characters enter the plot and the ending has a surprising twist. Thoroughly recommended!

We’ve all been there. A bunch of people lacking motivation are thrown together and obliged to get on with other, with an uninspiring leader desperately trying but failing to enthuse them. Think office training course or, in the case of Keith Watts’ comic tour-de-force, a creative writing class populated by weird and wacky characters and a tutor who tries in vain to inspire his lacklustre students. “We are, without doubt, a motley crew” begins our narrator, Pete, a social misfit bar none who struggles with life, relationships and the world in general. But gradually as the weeks pass, despite his struggle to connect with his fellow classmates, Pete becomes drawn in to the class dynamics and begins to question his classmates’ motivations as a darker side emerges. This is Keith Watts’ fourth novel and it is his best so far. It’s a great read, full of laugh out loud moments. Indeed it’s one of the funniest books I’ve ever read, on a par with the best comic fiction.
