Sense and Sustainability
eBook (PDF), 165 Pages
The transition to a low carbon economy will be challenging but necessary. This book makes the case for a practical education for sustainability based on exploring and testing frameworks especially the ideas and innovations behind the leading edge of design, business and industry today. Inspired by understanding living systems, this new circular economy is transforming the sense of what a sustainable future might be. Education contributes most to the future of our young people when it opens up discussion on how sustainable can be aspirational: in our view, it needs to be about ‘better and better’ not ‘less and less’. This highly illustrated book also comes with online materials and resources for continuing professional development. An inspiring and timely book for educators.

Oct 7, 2009"Ken Webster's idea." This book attempts to tackle the issues in a systemic way but misses. The ideas are simple, not thoroughly thought through and are conventional in nature. I did enjoy some of the resources which this book pointed me in the direction of but would have rather gone directly to the source.
Jul 7, 2009"A quick read" I came across Ken Webster at a UK conference on sustainability and thought his ideas had merit. The ebook download was a good summary of these ideas but he remained more engaging in person.
Apr 29, 2009"Oh my! This is 'must have' have book for educators and business" This book really does set the bench mark for what is to come in ESD and boy is it optimistic in it's message (that's right, you heard me, OPTIMISTIC!)! Having seen a fabulous review by UNESCO on one of the main UK ESD website, I thought I had to give it a go and find out what all the fuss was really about - I wasn't to be disappointed. This book touches on many of the new ideas starting to emerge in business and ESD and brings them together in a way which leaves us with some powerful and exciting insights as to how we can actually move forward, away from the old guilt ridden culture of ESD, into the more optimistic but very possible era to come. Sense and Sustainability is well presented, littered with fabulous illustrations and inspiring quotes. The diagrams which carry the ideas work well, are very clear and easy to understand. I am yet to see another book that puts all these complex ideas into such a... More > simple message. This book is very much more than just about systemic change, it's main message is about changing our thinking from the linear "take-make-dump" to a non-linear, circular way of thinking using some fabulous metaphors like the abundance of blossom on a cherry tree but the lack of waste it produces. Yipeee, we don't have to do with less, just be more clever in our approach! Brilliant book!< Less
