I am the primary author of this first volume in a series of books aimed at bringing Shop and Engineering classes back to American schools. The original curriculum was developed for the Thales Academies, a low-cost, world-class, system of K-12 schools in North Carolina. I also taught the classes in its first three years. 'Shop and Engineering' is a classical curriculum in engineering, starting with drawing straight lines on a piece of paper with only a pencil, and ending with certification in one of the most advanced Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools, free of charge for education use. A classical education in basic shop skills parallels classroom learning of engineering, starting with identification of hand and power tools and ending in the use of 3D printers to create the objects students design on paper and in CAD. All in the first year. 'Shop and Engineering' has been developed with an towards the limited budgets and experience in these subjects found in private, charter and home... More > schools. It includes exercises after every chapter, 24 interesting shop projects as well as 17 inspiring biographies of American inventors. Subsequent volumes will comprise a compressed version of the best mechanical engineering curricula found globally, where the author has spent his 40+ year career in engineering and manufacturing. This curricula is intended for people who enjoy making and fixing things, providing them with a solid foundation for careers in engineering design, manufacturing and industry in general. Those who complete the studies will be strong candidates for industrial apprenticeships or entry into engineering college. Some may even begin their careers as entrepreneurs early with the knowledge and skills obtained, foregoing college altogether as many of America's greatest inventors and industrialists did. The author began his long engineering career as a draftsman prior to the PC revolution and has used the most advanced design and manufacturing technology in the fields of aerospace, defense, energy, transportation and others in the US and abroad. This was due in great part to a solid foundation in the subjects found in this curriculum.< Less
