Men who sailed the Atlantic during the 1800s did not have much chance when severe gale force winds picked up. The only way ships could survive is to load the galley with weight called Ballast. When ships came overseas to pick up fine Atlantic goods they dumped their ballast to make way for lumber and barrels of salmon from the Miramichi Shores. They took a calculated risk of balancing loads properly. Today, we used everything from old railway ties to lead for ballast. Sailboats have a very heavy keel just for this purpose.
