The MAG columns

ByKevin Williams

The popular Survival Skills column has been running since 2002 in the Motorcycle Action Group magazines. The column came about what entirely by accident. I wrote a letter to the editor, Ian Mutch, about collisions at junctions. He invited me to contribute a piece on the subject for the following edition of the magazine. Then he asked for another. And another. And I've been continuing to send him articles every issue, almost without a break. Here are the first 40 or so articles, available to read in one place. Many have been updated and revised. Though all the topics are about better riding, they deal with issues as diverse as recovering from a cornering mistake to overcoming tenseness, from safer overtaking to coping with poor road surfaces, and from riding abroad to riding in bad weather. The columns don't seek to give you all the answers to riding a motorcycle - no sort of book can do that. But the content of each article should give you clues to help yourself and to make you think just a little about what you're doing on two wheels so that you don't end up relying on other road users to keep you out of trouble. ---READER COMMENTS--- "Particularly fascinating are the items on the development and improvement of the mental skills we learn as we ride a bike" ”Am already on the 'Group Thrills Not Group Spills' chapter of your book and must say it's the best bit of motorcycle manual type literature that I've read! A 'real world readable alternative' to Road Craft!”... Jim Sanderson, Kent Firebike Rider & creator of the UK's 'Biker Down' courses
