The Tale of the Ramajians by Mattocks is a story that takes you into a world of magic and wonder, and shows that everything is not as wonderful as it may first appear. The reader first meets Alaya Stevenson, a young woman with intelligent abilities, yet lacking the drive to pursue a further career in education. She lives with her mother, a woman who lost her husband eight years prior to the story, and drowns her grief in drinking. Her mother, Janis, tries to be a good mother to Alaya, but much of the household duties are left up to Alaya. The initial character build-up is nice and steady, without immediately rushing into telling the story. The author takes each piece of the story and weaves it into an intricately detailed form that leaves the reader looking forward to what the next page will bring. The story delves into the belief of magic and how few are able to wield it, and also how those that yearn for it are a also a force to be reckoned with, since they are willing to go to any... More > lengths to receive it. The story is definitely a page turner, and being the author's first book, a definitely good one with much excitement as you discover the secrets to a life that was thought to have never existed. Mattocks shows much promise in her future works!< Less
