Paperback, 242 Pages

The Lu Family Saga is an autobiography of a young girl whose great-grandfather, Lu Haodong, plotted alongside Dr. Sun Yat-sen to overturn the feeble Qing Dynasty, the last of the Chinese Dynasties. During the Chinese Revolution, Lu Haodong made the supreme sacrifice for the love of his country – at the age of 27, Haodong died a hero, and his comrade Sun Yat-sen became the Father of Modern China. Generations later, the girl was born into a world still in turmoil – living through WWII, the Japanese invasion, and the civil war in China. Under the Communist leader Mao Zedong, she and her family struggled, suffered, and survived the Social Revolution, the Land Reform Act, and the Great Leap Forward movements. In the Summer of 1959, she broke free from her hopeless life in Southern China in a desperate escape. Over a decade, every member of her family risked life to escape from China – the very motherland for which her great-grandfather had fought so dearly.

Mar 4, 2019What an incredible journey I was allowed to go through as I read this book! The author's ability to bring to life the story of courageous family members, especially her great-grandfather,who had a huge part in overturning the last of the Chinese Dynasties is just stunning! Her description of the hardships each generation faced, and how valiantly they overcame them all is a testament to the entire family. I learned so much about Chinese history, that I am amazed. I have been recommending this wonderful story to my friends, it is a terrific read.
Mar 3, 2019Chinese History has always interested me as I know that China has played and will continue to play an important part in world affairs. But I had never been exposed to a families intimate experiences as has been so wonderfully portrayed by Kim S. Luke. This is a very timely and well written book. I wish that somehow millions of people would be exposed to the experiences that this family endured before finding their way to freedom by fleeing the brutality and censorship imposed upon them by their government. It is nothing short of a miracle that this family somehow, against terrific odds and over a number of years were able to escape and be re-united as a family again. This book will fill your heart with just about every emotion that we have ever experienced. Many kudos to this fine author who did years of research to bring us this wonderful saga.
Feb 27, 2019An amazing and compelling story about the resilience of a family subjected to the cruelties of corrupt governments. I couldn't put it down and was sad when it ended. I look forward to the next installment!
Feb 8, 2019Wow! I feel energized after reading this amazing autobiographical book! This is an inspiring story of personal courage, inner strength and abiding optimism. Kim has shared her personal story which includes challenges and experiences I could never have imagined growing up in the United States. This book is also a history lesson. Kim gives us a first-person account of village life in Southern China both before and during the Mao regime. Then her adjustment a very different life in Hong Kong. Kim’s touching and sometimes humorous recounting of close kinship and caring friendships, as well as the hardships of daily life and the common human bond that helped them survive is striking. The family’s journey to freedom through Hong Kong and to the United States is a beautiful story, well told. Through it all, Kim remained hopeful and never compromised her dreams, which at times required much effort and creativity to achieve. The fact that she and her family not only survived, but thrived, is a... More > testament to human capacity when hope remains present. Never give up on your dream and never lose sight of your goal!< Less
