We live in a world in which the body is both protected and exposed. The concept of embodied life experience is addressed in this thesis, with reflections on themes of abjection, the sublime, and external technological interventions (or corruptions) of biotic processes. The practice of immersive installation art is discussed and illustrated via works entitled A Farewell to Flesh and I felt it shelter to speak to you. It is intended as a poetic and theoretical meditation on the concept of transition and transformation as expressed through the utilization, upsetting, and questioning of binary oppositions. It evokes the complexities of embodied experience through critical engagement with the concept of “in-between.” Transformative experiences can include physical transitions, yet they can also have political, social and spiritual implications. Emotional states, corporeal functions, sexuality, and life processes are here expressed through biomorphic, fiber- based sculptural installation.
