Eschar is a brilliant novella and a testament to the obstacles of modern love. It is refreshing to hear of the ordinary fairytale quest from the male point of view – and in such an extraordinary manner. Kenney’s work is in fact singular in structure, content, narration, and style. It is relationships and love and sex and personal growth for people who love good writing. It is the story of those of us who do not yet have our happy ending. Eschar is at once: heartbreaking, cynical, nostalgic, somber, optimistic, realistic, and hopeful. It is the story of the knight attempting to remove his armor so that he can meet the damsel in distress as soon as she escapes her own tower of pain. Eschar questions our ability to love ourselves and to love others, and our tendencies to engage in or avoid self-inflicted pain during the process. I myself have several favorite lines from the novella, and each time I read them, the word warrior within melts again. Lyrical genius.

This novella holds a deep and honest insight into a young man’s journey of finding love after a major breakup of a serious relationship. The reader is provided a view of the inner-workings of his lost and searching mind during the encounters that he has with the various female characters that all hold the possibility of being his next big devotion. Each alluring woman that he find himself falling for is able to show him a new world of possibilities, bring forth haunting questions and revelations from dark places of his being, and all of his wants, urges, thought patterns, strengths, and weaknesses are all on display for the reader to take in and observe the exposed soul at will. At the end of this well written and captivating book, I was wishing that the novella went on and on to fill the sense of optimistic longing that I so related to with the wandering soul in search of his One and True Love with more words and pages, but grateful that it left me reflecting my own adventures with... An absolute must read for every woman trying to understand the actions of some men. The heroine's journey is relatable to a lot of people, whether having similar experiences yourself or trying to love someone who may be traveling the same tortuous path in an effort to find true love. Eschar captures the reader immediately. I found myself addicted to the story and looked forward to each new page.

The journey of this young man was dark, honest and relateable. Though the main focus was his internal conflict and trajic realizations, by the end, I felt a sense of hope. That's all you get. Must read.
