With illustrations by renowned artist Susan Omand, Kneel Downe returns to his universe and tells the story of Amelia, a character that appears in every strand of the VirulentBlurb, an echo tying the whole collection of strings together. Set in a world of Chaos Lords and Chrome Dragons, Amelia’s Song sees her journey through this vast land, meeting old friends and encountering new ones in her quest to stop the Knights of Hell.

Apr 9, 2014It is refreshing to read a book not written in a standard format.

Dec 22, 2013Amelia's Song is a magical book. Alongside Susan Omand's gorgeous illustrations, Kneel Downe gives us his words, and his words give us a world full of wisdom, danger, grief, love, and the unexpected. Originally written in tweets on the author's twitter account, the story works even better in paperback format, in my opinion. I love the emphasis given by the 140-characters-or-fewer paragraphs, but as addicted as I am to twitter and the concept of twitter writing, I still love physical books. Amelia's Song felt like the best of both. This story lives at many crossroads - soft-focus and sharp clarity, myth and truth, ethereal and visceral, punk and glam rock, life and death, male and female - and at those crossroads, the author digs just below the surface and discovers a new thing altogether. Over and over again. Downe has many beautiful turns of phrase, including "you must laugh else the world will break you", "(...)the child of cinnamon and jasmine (...) the Daughter of... More > Dreams", "And her tears stung as baby universes must sting..." and, when speaking of a brutal but necessary act the heroine commits on herself in "a place that only children, lovers and goddess' truly understand" - this is writing that will stay with the reader. It's a telling that is at once unsettling, heroic and unbearably sad. I was a latecomer to the Virulent Blurb universe, but thanks to Amelia's Song I can't wait to read the rest of Downe's work. Nov 16, 2013Myths get told out of a need. Children are born out of love. Amelia is a mythic child. She dances on edge of thought and flirts with reason. Kneel has thoughtfully told us of her adventures. Thank you.
Nov 16, 2013Imagine Alice In Wonderland refracted through beautiful prisms of Jeff Noon and Jeanette Winterson. The vertiginous leaps of Noon’s imagination twinned with the poetic lyricism of Winterson’s images. Amelia meets with animal, Tarot and mythic archetypes, swaps lore with them and embraces them, often ingesting them inside parts of herself as she quests to save the parallel universe she straddles along with out own. With a smile, a soothing manner, a quick wit and wise pronouncements she meets every challenge. Amelia is the dream self of Joshua Knight, who is in turn Amelia and an ingested Emily. Parallel existences which are elegantly served by the narrative style which is both imagistic and yet the the reader is not readily permitted any full visual conjuration since the words are not linked in paragraphs and sentences following the previous ones. This is less a a plot unfurling by regular degrees and more as Downe offers in the opening “Of Introductions and Explanations” a journey, a... More > shamanic one of visions, quests and yes, probably fractures too. With the words resonating with both their visual association and also their lyrical sound stripped away from being embedded in a plodding plot, this is the reverberation, the pulse between two level of appreciation of each line. Downe shows himself to be a majestic world-builder, as this book seamlessly continues his previous “Virulent Blurb: Fractures” as characters there are shown in their origins in this book. However, what’s particularly remarkable about this book is the complete shift in voice. “Fractures” was clipped, violent noirish in style, whereas here is a beautiful female voice one hundred and weighty degrees removed from its predecessor. This truly is a wondrous, bewitching voice to bathe and luxuriate in. The book is illustrated throughout by Susan Ormand and it’s interesting to me whether the images intentionally get more unsettling as the reader progresses through the book.< Less
