This paper evaluates a sample of German banks in 2004. We hypothesize high competitiveness in the banking industry. And, the necessary condition for such competitiveness is that banks operating in the industry are at least technically efficient otherwise they will be compelled to exit the market. We obtain the technical and scale efficiency scores from a nonparametric frontier methodology, the DEA. This paper is structured as follows; section 1 introduces and justifies why we chose Germany; section 2 discusses German’s economy and the features of German Banks while section 3 considers efficiency estimation techniques. Section 4 looks at DEA as an efficiency measurement technique whereas sections 5 and 6 discuss our findings and concludes, respectively.
