At different points in time, suburban areas have had to deal with the reality of crime just like other areas have had to. The reasons for the crimes that occur in suburban communities might be different than the ones for crimes that occur in urban ones, based on context and the various niches that are involved. Pertinent to this issue of suburban crime are race relations, a misconception of suburban neighborhoods, and the level of strength of community safety. There are some who say social disorganization theory explains why crime occurs in suburbs, but in actuality, routine activities theory provides a more efficient argument as to why crime occurs in such areas. Join me as I briefly discuss some of the complex ideas associated with this major issue in society.
