The sign of one destined for a life of muse and poetry is a healthy dose of alienation. How can you be a poet if you are not alienated by the world and its ways. In Leaves of Poetry, Kyriakos hints at this alienation. Divided into six parts with a Foreword and an Afterword our first hint at this sense of alienation comes in ‘The People of Cyprus’ on page 14. This is a brave poem, a ‘cri de coeur’ which younger readers from his homeland will empathise with. Each poem is a leaf that needs to be turned over and examined to check the temperature and the season. The poet is a cunning linguist as evidenced in a ‘Night at the Circus’ on page 40, he plays with words like a ringmaster his animals. He tames and trains his words. He is a young poet, still under 30 and the angst and frustration creeps through sometimes. No bad thing but needs to be checked and similarly trained. This is an outstanding work for English is the poet’s second language but he writes as if he thinks in English, perhaps... More > he does. Thank goodness for the Greek Language which as a Latin Scholar I can only be amazed by. I will leave others to review those. The plight of Cyprus and the story of Cyprus is the back story to these many leaves. I sense also that he may be a fan, a connoisseur of ‘magic realism’ as it imbues his work. When I hear the Celtic sounds again on page 91 and Composed for Beaumaris Castle on page 96 conclude this work with yearning romanticism. On now to his next volume and latest offering.< Less
