The Legend of Navin Holt - Zombie Hunter
Paperback, 187 Pages
Prints in 3-5 business days
Around 620,000 men died during the American Civil War that raged from 1861 to 1865. Of these, over 204,000 were killed in action or died from their wounds. Nearly twice that number succumbed to diseases such as typhoid, dysentery and consumption. The rest are unaccounted for. Both Union and Confederate records are sketchy in their official explanations, writing the numbers off as ‘desertion’, ‘missing in action’ or ‘unknown’. The truth about the missing dead has never been revealed. Until now. PART ONE OF TWO

Jul 2, 2011This book absolutely IS the dogs conkers! For anyone who doesn't like zombies, westerns or war books, buy it anyway cos behind that there cover is a BLOODY good story! The prose is Twain-esque in it's long shambling sentences, easy osey like the counties it is set in but it's part of a well researched and original book. In your minds eyes you see the horrors witnessed by Obe and Navin but you can almost taste them too. Farrelly obviously knows his subject and this shows is what is excellent paced adventure that not only makes your toes curl and nose wrinkle in places but genuinely made me laugh out loud. Like Gerry Carpenter, I cannot wait for the next installment. A tale set in dark days, with dark deeds, the undead and to quote the book humour 'Blacker than the earl o Hells waistcoat!' Brilliant adventure...the writing takes you right there and in my opinion, that's the bones of any good story, you are there with the characters and Navin Holt does exactly that.
Jun 30, 2011I nearly only gave this book 4 stars cos it reminded me to much of the pile of dross that was jonah Hex with josh brolin and Megan Fox. But that is were the similarity ends. This book is everything that film could have and shouldve been and it had Z O M B I E S!!! It was a bit like the game red Dead: Undead Nightmare as well but the story is far better. I am a big zombie fan and thats the only reason i got this because i am a collector of zombie books games and films. The zombs were cool in this i thought because this book broke the "rulez" on how zombs should be killed ie a headshot One of the characters says that he couldnt imagine if every shot had to be a head shot and that was one of the things use to annoy me about movies like dawn of the Dead cos the characters in that movie always made a headshot every time, like EVERY time. And none of them were expert marksmen. So i thought that was pretty cool. This book is deeper than the average zombie story and goes into things... More > like slavery and the Native americans and how they were treated. The civil war is talked about but not seen but i guess that will be in book 2 as Holt and Obe were heading north to were the war was happening. Good book! Hope there will be a film of it in the future that will be better 10times better than jonah Hex! :)< Less
Jun 28, 2011The first thing I must tell you is that I never write reviews but the originality of this novel made me put skin to iPad glass. There are genre defining moments in every body if work and this is one of them. Farrelly's has not only managed to take a currently popular subject and infuse it with a reality and humour I've never read before. I got the free chapter on amazon and immediately went to lulu to purchase. If you are a zombie fan or a reader who loves a great story then I promise you, you'll not be disappointed. When I found out the name of the main character I cried with laughter. Navin himself is scarred, flawed, evil and good all rolled up into one like a wrinkled cigarette. Think 'the man with no name' meets Jeff Bridges and your half way there. READ THIS.
Jun 22, 2011I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book. I love zombies, but have no interest whatsoever in the American Civil War which is when this is set. But I gave it a go because I was intrigued by the blurb on the back. What a pleasant surprise I got! Even if you know next to nothing about the Civil War, it doesn’t matter, because this novel transports you wholly to a real time and place and you become immersed in it completely. I thought it was all going to be boring history but the milieu is as exciting a place as any fantasy or science fiction setting and the characters are so well depicted that the historical background really doesn’t matter. I’m also generally not fond of first-person narratives – I’ve only read a few books that I enjoyed that employed the device (like Joe Haldeman’s classic The Forever War) but again, I was won over. The narrator, Obadiah, is funny and intelligent, witty and cynical, but also warm and compassionate. Navin Holt himself comes across as unlikable -... More > unlovable even - but you can’t help BUT love him and his straightforward ways! The things he comes out with are so memorable and sometimes plain hysterical! Even the secondary animal characters (Nickel the horse and Wishbone the ugly dog) are well-rounded. As for the horror, which, let’s face it, we all read zombie books for, is brilliantly depicted. The zombies are fierce and unrelenting and can only be killed in a certain way which I don’t want to spoil for other readers. I never read any zombie fiction or watched any movies that used the same idea, so kudos to L. John Farrelly for coming up with something truly original. I loved this book. Like all good zombie fiction, the story isn’t just about undead cannibals, it’s about people. It was by turns thought-provoking, horrific, action-packed and in places just laugh out loud funny and I devoured the whole thing in just a few hours. My only complaint is that I have to wait for the second part! I need to find out what happens! If you love zombie fiction, then make sure to give this book a read. It’s a must-have for any zombie fan!< Less
