Lives of Saint Artaud

ByLa vertèbre et le rossignol

Lives of Saint Artaud is a story reconstructed mainly from texts, letters and notes that Antonin Artaud wrote while he was interned at the asylum of Rodez and looking back on his past, his past lives, his experience in the surrealist movement. The last passage of my manuscript is a rewrite of the Popol Vuh, the sacred text of the Maya, written in Quiche dialect, in which Artaud recognized his own story. The names of the Mayan heroes were simply changed to that of the poet. Participants in this special issue of La Vertèbre et le Rossignol were invited to freely illustrate one or more episodes of their choice, or only certain elements, characters, or objects from the story.
