At the end of this book, in the annotated bibliography, Metz, writing about Marcus Zusak's The Book Thief, says, "I hope someday to write a book this good." For many people his book, The Locksmith, is that good. We've all read many, many fine and riveting books about the Holocaust. Well, you can add this to the list. Kurt Kann, the real-life character that Metz researches first hand through voluminous interviews and source documents and then presents in a first-person perspective lived through some momentous and horrific times. All this comes to life through Metz' style and storytelling. Because of him, Kann's life has legs. Kann's story is not all heroics; fortunately none of that is glossed over. I met Lafe Metz at Chatham University, where he had started work on this book. What a thrill to see the final result. Jane Fishman/Savannah, Georgia
