Larry Rochelle's "Plaza Blues" is a must-read for noir fans and suspense readers in Kansas City. Rochelle's hero, tennis pro Palmer Morel, seeks a new pet project in buying and restoring a historic movie theater. Little does he know the purchase is tied up with the mob, who has been hiding bodies in the theater for decades. When Palmer starts to get cold feet, the mob targets him and his family. "Plaza Blues" is a gritty novel that dwells on the dark side of human nature. Conspiracy theorists will also find the book a fun read. The book has a large cast of characters, but Rochelle masterfully makes it easy to keep them straight in the reader's head. I never found myself flipping back to remind myself who was who. Morel is a complicated protagonist. He might not be the most faithful of boyfriends, but he is always ready to jump into action when the occasion arises, such as when the Plaza catches fire during the Thanksgiving lighting ceremony, or when he has to give... More > CPR to an unsavory character. One warning I will give to readers is that this is part of a series, and doesn't feel like a stand-alone novel. It contains threads from the previous novel, and didn't quite wrap things up at the end. I was especially curious what happened to the Yoo-Me character. However, Rochelle does give enough information on the back story that the reader won't find this confusing. Kansas Citians will enjoy the hometown references, as will crime story fans everywhere who like atmospheric noir mysteries.< Less
