I am not a hiker but not because I wouldn't want to be. I just do not have the physical stamina. I am in awe of those who do as they are able to explore and experience places I would love to see up close and personal. It's almost as if hiking has been a calling as he started young and has never stopped. After reading this book, like my American Express card, I would not want to leave home without it. It appears that he has saved any hiker hours of research and perhaps even prevented disaster! This book is more than a "how to". The photographs are spectacular and some personal history and stories are provided which make the experience more real. I would have preferred more stories as I expect in all the decades Larry has hiked there must have been many dramatic, funny and even poignant experiences which would been an added attraction for the reader. This is a book for all actual or just hikers in spirit. Maybe some of the hikers in spirit will get out there and join Larry for... More > real. I hope so. Hike on!< Less

I wish I were a hiker so I could use this book as a guide to the beautiful places where Mr. Zuiker has hiked. To me, he finds joy in the intricate design of life on this planet and has a deep respect for nature. He relishes the challenges of the remote and complex trails around our beautiful country. It is very easy to follow his steps and it would be very useful to anyone who wants to experience the outdoors to the fullest extent possible. It isn't just a how-to book. I found it to be a very personal accounting of his appreciation of the spirit of walking and taking the physical challenge of sometimes very long hikes into little-explored paths. He can almost see how our terrain has changed and evolved over the centuries in the gorgeous landscapes he describes. Once again, I would like to be able to walk his paths with the ease and delight that he finds in the areas untouched by damaging civilization.

In a friendly conversational style, Larry Zuiker succinctly captures the excitement, awe and drama of hiking while he offers practical advice gleaned from his own decades of hiking experience. Although I do not hike, I admire and respect the author's quest for continuous renewal and uplift through hiking. Over the years he has pared down all that separates him from the trail and the direct connection with nature it provides. At the same time he has learned the value of researching an area, of planning, and of sharing his quest with valued companions. "Just being on the trail is reward enough," he said of Mt. Humphreys. I appreciate being on the trail with Larry vicariously through this book and his Facebook posts.

This book is a great personal insight into many magnificent hiking opportunities. They are written by someone who truly encompasses the joy of exploration and hiking. The pictures where breathtaking and helped me to envision places I may never see but could still feel from Larry's writing.

This little book of hiking adventures was such a quick and fun read. I was able to revisit some of the places that I've experienced in the past and gain some new in-site to some of the off-the-beaten-track trails in Utah and California. Through the author's experiences I am encouraged to visit some of these special places. I look forward to another of Larry Zuiker's works with more narratives of both well-known and hidden trails. Hope it won't be too long and may never the day come when he hangs up his boots.
