"What A Novel It Is!" What a novel it is! The characters are masterfully drawn—their relationships skillfully interwoven, their motivations clear and unforced. The poems and songs interspersed throughout support theme and mood and add texture, and the references to cities, educational institutions, and educational and entertainment figures give the work authenticity. I always give any such work the "title test"--and yours passes admirably. The memorable title caught my attention at once, and I kept looking for the point at which the meaning would be revealed. Once I found it with Rainey's reflection upon her life with "Lawyer Davis" (after Step), it seemed well placed within the scope of the novel as well as appropriately understated. As Rainey and Willia are parallel characters, it obviously also applies to the life Willia expected to share with Doug (after Buck). And, then, after reflection upon the whole novel, it applies to others--Evie, Martha Alice,... More > Mittie, Addie--even Red Art, Artie, and Buck.... Dr. Frances A. "Rock On, Lauren!" I finished your fabulous book a few days ago, but I needed to let Willia's story sink in before I wrote to you. That poor woman became so real to me. I'm so impressed at how you made that story . . . such a successful part of the book! It's really a powerful section, and it caps Rainey's story so..."nicely" isn't the right word, but it works. I loved all the characters (well, actually I hated some!)--and I feel like Rainey about Step. I was so charmed by him at first! Rainey has her flaws, but she's a strong, wonderful person. . . . So often I wanted to pat a character on the back or take her by the shoulders and shake her, or knock him upside the head. They were all so real to me. So, basically, my book review is, "WOW!!!!!" and "Please write more!!!!!" Rock on, Lauren!!!

"Oprah, PLEASE read this book!" You see the problem was: I couldn’t stop crying when I finished REASONABLE JOY! Trust me, I am definitely not a “Weeping Winnie” or whatever you want to call it! However, the book REASONABLE JOY took me to emotional places I wasn’t even aware existed within me. I consider myself an avid reader and there have been many books that I have read lately, by these so-called “new authors” that have left me scratching my head in awe as to how these books have actually made it onto public book shelves! If any of these books made me cry it was out of frustration that they are so readily available and Reasonable Joy is not. Reasonable Joy is not only well written, it is well thought out. The characters are so fleshed out that you feel that you intimately know them. It is a page turner that has all the elements to keep your mind stimulated: humor, tragedy, pathos, mystery, and most importantly, you care about each and every one of the multitude of... More > characters whose lives and interconnections have you rushing to get to the next page. This is a must read for people who consider themselves “true readers.” I’ve been reading ever since kindergarten (and I ain’t no spring chicken!) and this is one of my most memorable books ever.< Less
