"Editorial Review" Mystery News Newly divorced Sarah Cassidy returns to Maine, where she learned to sail 40 years earlier at Migawoc Camp for Girls. While she’s staying the summer with the camp’s former owners, Sarah is working on restoring her classic wooden sailboat, Owl, hoping to sail it. The boat was once owned by Myra Huggard, a curmudgeon who lived near the camp and with whom Sarah had a friendship of sorts. Myra died at age 94 and shortly after that her friend and sometime caregiver Cathy Leduc disappeared. Police speculate both women were murdered, even though Cathy’s body has not been found, and have questioned Cathy’s boyfriend Eldon Tupper. Another police theory is that Cathy murdered Myra and then took off. Sarah just wants work on her boat but finds herself drawn into the puzzle of Myra’s death. As it turns out, Myra was a thorn in the just about everyone’s side. That includes some new – and much resented – outsiders who are building McMansions all over the... More > coastline. Sarah and boat builder Oliver Wendell team up to get answers to some thorny questions and, in the process, unearth long-buried secrets. Lawrence Rotch has populated Gravely Dead with wonderful Down East eccentrics with terrific names like “Pearly” Gaites and “Ziggy” Breener, and plunked them down in a beautifully written mid-coast Maine locale. The story’s pace was a bit slow at various points but that wasn’t enough to decrease my enjoyment of the characters, setting and story. Sarah Cassidy is a great cozy heroine and her relationship with Oliver Wendell is rife with potential for future books and more mysteries to solve. - - - Mystery News< Less
