The fast fiction challenge
eBook (PDF), 192 Pages
Lee Barnett gave other writers, and readers of his blog, a simple challenge... to challenge HIM.He requested: "reply with a title (no longer than four words) about which you'd like me to write a fast fiction of exactly 200 words, along with a word you want me to include in the tale." And the challenges arrived: Stories with titles like "She Killed Me Twice", "The Brain That Exploded", "The Pachyderm Wore Pink" and "Single White Fee Male" with words like "ranunculus", "vaginate" and "carronade".300 stories later, here for the first time in print are 180 of the best.

Oct 11, 2009"Original and distinctive writing" Well written, original and distinctive. A collection of concise stories, all but one 200 words long, that draw you in and never fail to delight. A fabulously varied set of stories. Some are dark, some humorous, most have a clever twist but none are predictable. The opening story in particular stuns with a clarity of prose and a truthfulness that resonates every time I read it. It's amazing how much he communicates in 200 words. Barnett has an interesting mind, though not always a comfortable one. A great collection, worth every penny.
Aug 9, 2009"Awesome Collection" I have been an avid reader of Budgie's Fast Fictions though his blog for a couple of years now, so I pounced when the collected printed addition was announced. I'm glad to say the collection does not disappoint! All brilliantly written, all engaging, all thought provoking, and many just that little bit... odd :) It's amazing how 200 words can make you think so much about the world today, or, more terrifyingly, the world as it could be in 10 or 20 years! Highly recommended!
Jul 31, 2009"Short Stories are alive and well" Stephen King said recently that the short story is a dying artform. Lee (budgie) Barnett may have something to say about that. In the interests of full disclosure, there's a couple of stories I've suggested in there, but despite that, I'd still highly recommend the book. It is beautifully written, and the amount of story that can be packed into 200 words is astounding. Each story is different, going from comedy to tragedy, even with a side step into poetry at a point. When he goes dark, he can go really dark, but when he's looking to amuse, he never fails to put a smile on your face. I can not recommend this enough.
Mar 7, 2009"He makes you wonder about the inside of his head" And whether knows something we should all have known last year. I highly recommend the stories on pages 53 and 137 - no they're not my own challenges, and yes, some of mine are in there. Budgie can go from dark and brooding to light-hearted at the twist of an anvil. The reader is trained by the 10th page to expect nothing less than the twisty little passages of a rat maze where only the flavour of the cheese at the end is unknown - only to discover an entire strawberry shortcake! By the way, Budgie's tagged that maze with lots of interesting graffiti - it's a good re-read, too. This book deserves interesting bookmarks, not folded corners or torn bits of paper or sticky notes.
Mar 3, 2009"Highly recommended" I can’t remember how I stumbled across Lee “Budgie” Barnett’s livejournal, but it is the short stories he posts there that made me return. The Fast Fiction Challenge is a collection of 180 of these stories. The constraint of exactly 200 words gives plenty of scope to set a scene or a character, then with the last sentence present the twist. Although certain themes re-occur, no two stories are alike, but all are excellent, thought-provoking and very enjoyable. I look forward to Volume II.
