The Heians or Pinans are widely the most recognisable and practised kata in karate circles today, they are also arguably the most misunderstood. If analysed, practised and taught effectively the Heian/Pinan kata have the potential to be a complete fighting system for the learning karateka, containing strikes, kicks, joint locks, throws, grappling and so on.
With over 350 pictures this book shows how the Heian kata can be used as tools for a physical confrontation, building skills for this environment that could help an individual escape from this scenario, using simple, effective, progressive bunkai contained within this series of kata.
‘Lee’s book helps show that karate can be a very real solution to the problem of civilian self defence. It is an excellent read and I highly recommend it.’

This is NOT your standard kata book showing just the moves and maybe a few unrealistic applications that would only work against another trained martial artist attacking with pre-arranged martial arts techniques...Lee's excellent pragmatic book demonstrates realistic and workable techniques that can be used as they were originally intended - in a civilian self-defence scenario against an opponent that is not compliant or has martial arts knowledge. Highly recommended!
This book is a fantastic read and a great reference for the Heian/Pinan katas. It gives a very practical approach to the katas, bringing them to life. It encourages the reader to think outside the box, outside their comfort zone. The photograph/text layout is easy to follow and gives depth and understanding to the subject. Highly recommended.
If your looking for a very clear and concise breakdown of the Heian/Pinan Katas then this is the book for you. Every move of the kata and the bunkai is captured in clear black and white photos and is described in plain simple text. I found it very easy to follow the bunkai for the katas by just following the pictures but if there was anything I was unsure about the text was there to back up the picture. This book will find a place in my kit bag and as a regular training reference for me as I tweak my katas and explore the bunkai. I fully expect my copy to become very dog eared and well thumbed. My only question for Mr Taylor would be "can we please have similar treatment now of the more advanced katas".
